About Saraswati:

Saraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge, she is depicted as a beautiful woman with four arms, as she rides upon a white swan among the sacred lotus flowers. Her hands hold a palm leaf book (known in Bali as a lontar) which is the source of science or knowledge; a mala with 108 beads symbolizing knowledge that is never ending; and the musical instrument veena symbolizing growth of culture.

The swans symbolism is wisdom, so that one's knowledge may distinguish between good and evil. 
And the lotus a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration and rebirth. Its characteristics are a perfect analogy for humankind, its roots deep in the mud, the Lotus rises up from the dirty water to produce the most beautiful flowers.
