The Story of Dewi Sri Bawang; The old folkloric tale of two sisters Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah is known throughout Indonesia. Bawang Merah is pure of heart, kind and generous to her family, nature and the natural world. While her sister Bawang Putih is mean spirited. She is constantly bullies her sister Bawang Merah because she is jealous of Merah's kindness and beauty.
Because of her sisters constant bullying Bawang Merah is driven to the forest where Dewi Sri Bawang is blessed by the gods and nature for her kindness, and the golden bird is sent to protect her .
This sculpture shows Dewi Sri Bawang's modesty and beauty and the gift from nature the golden bird.
We have worked directly with Balinese artist and crafts people since 1988. During Maine's freezing cold winters we return to Bali and our island home. While there we collaborate with the Balinese (mostly family & friends) and create special offerings for our shop. We believe our offerings should be culturally significant using local sustainable materials and craftsmanship whenever possible. Thus in turn keeping the arts alive in ever evolving fast changing Bali in the world of globalization, while enriching the lives of our family & friends whom we work with by creating a market for the beautiful art of Bali.
